  1. Bereshit 16:1

    וְשָׂרַי אֵשֶׁת אַבְרָם לֹא יָלְדָה לוֹ וְלָהּ שִׁפְחָה מִצְרִית וּשְׁמָהּ הָגָר

    . .

    And Sarai the wife of Abram had not borne him [children]; and she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar.

  2. Bereshit 16:2

    וַתֹּאמֶר שָׂרַי אֶל-אַבְרָם הִנֵּה-נָא עֲצָרַנִי יְהוָה מִלֶּדֶת--בֹּא-נָא אֶל-שִׁפְחָתִי אוּלַי אִבָּנֶה מִמֶּנָּה וַיִּשְׁמַע אַבְרָם לְקוֹל שָׂרָי

    . . . .

    And Sarai said to Abram: 'Behold, God has held me back from bearingenter to my maidservant; perhaps my house will be built up from her.' And Abram accepted the words of Sarai.

    וַתִּקַּח שָׂרַי אֵשֶׁת-אַבְרָם אֶת-הָגָר הַמִּצְרִית שִׁפְחָתָהּ מִקֵּץ עֶשֶׂר שָׁנִים לְשֶׁבֶת אַבְרָם בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן וַתִּתֵּן אֹתָהּ לְאַבְרָם אִישָׁהּ לוֹ לְאִשָּׁה

    . . .

    And Sarai the wife of Abram took Hagar the Egyptian, her maidservant, after ten years of Abram's dwelling in the land of Canaan; and she gave her to Abram her husband, to be a wife for him.

  4. Bereshit 16:4

    וַיָּבֹא אֶל-הָגָר וַתַּהַר וַתֵּרֶא כִּי הָרָתָה וַתֵּקַל גְּבִרְתָּהּ בְּעֵינֶיהָ

    . .

    And he came to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was diminished in her eyes.

  5. Bereshit 16:5

    וַתֹּאמֶר שָׂרַי אֶל-אַבְרָם חֲמָסִי עָלֶיךָ--אָנֹכִי נָתַתִּי שִׁפְחָתִי בְּחֵיקֶךָ וַתֵּרֶא כִּי הָרָתָה וָאֵקַל בְּעֵינֶיהָ יִשְׁפֹּט יְהוָה בֵּינִי וּבֵינֶיךָ

    . . . .

    And Sarai said to Abram: 'My wrong is upon you! I gave you my maidservant; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was diminished in her eyes. May God judge between me and you.'

    וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָם אֶל-שָׂרַי הִנֵּה שִׁפְחָתֵךְ בְּיָדֵךְ--עֲשִׂי-לָהּ הַטּוֹב בְּעֵינָיִךְ וַתְּעַנֶּהָ שָׂרַי וַתִּבְרַח מִפָּנֶיהָ

    . . . .

    Abram said to her: 'Behold, your maidservant is in your hand; do to her what is good in your eyes.' And Sarai afflicted her, until she fled from before her.

  7. Bereshit 16:7

    וַיִּמְצָאָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה עַל-עֵין הַמַּיִם--בַּמִּדְבָּר עַל-הָעַיִן בְּדֶרֶךְ שׁוּר

    And the angel of God found her by a spring of water in the wildernessby the spring on the road to Hajar (Shur).

    וַיֹּאמַר הָגָר שִׁפְחַת שָׂרַי אֵי-מִזֶּה בָאת--וְאָנָה תֵלֵכִי וַתֹּאמֶר--מִפְּנֵי שָׂרַי גְּבִרְתִּי אָנֹכִי בֹּרַחַת

    And he said: 'O Hagar, maidservant of Sarai, whence have you come, and whither do you go?' She said: 'From before Sarai my mistress I am fleeing.'

  9. Bereshit 16:9

    וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה שׁוּבִי אֶל-גְּבִרְתֵּךְ וְהִתְעַנִּי תַּחַת יָדֶיהָ

    . .

    And the angel of God said to her: 'Return to your mistress, and serve under her hands.'

  10. Bereshit 16:10

    וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה הַרְבָּה אַרְבֶּה אֶת-זַרְעֵךְ וְלֹא יִסָּפֵר מֵרֹב

    .

    Then he said to her: 'I shall greatly multiply your offspring, so that it shall not be counted from its abundance.'

    וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה הִנָּךְ הָרָה וְיֹלַדְתְּ בֵּן וְקָרָאת שְׁמוֹ יִשְׁמָעֵאל כִּי-שָׁמַע יְהוָה אֶל-עָנְיֵךְ

    . . .

    And he said to her: 'Behold, you are with child; you shall bear a son, and you shall name him Ishmaelfor God has heard your affliction.

  12. Bereshit 16:12

    וְהוּא יִהְיֶה פֶּרֶא אָדָם--יָדוֹ בַכֹּל וְיַד כֹּל בּוֹ וְעַל-פְּנֵי כָל-אֶחָיו יִשְׁכֹּן

    And he shall be a wild one among people; his hand against all, and the hand of all against him; and in the presence of all his brothers shall he dwell.'

    וַתִּקְרָא שֵׁם-יְהוָה הַדֹּבֵר אֵלֶיהָ אַתָּה אֵל רֳאִי כִּי אָמְרָה הֲגַם הֲלֹם רָאִיתִי--אַחֲרֵי רֹאִי

    . . .

    And she named the name of God, who had appeared to her: 'You are the Power who sees' — for she said: 'I have seen here Your mercy, after my vision of misery.'

  14. Bereshit 16:14

    עַל-כֵּן קָרָא לַבְּאֵר בְּאֵר לַחַי רֹאִי--הִנֵּה בֵין-קָדֵשׁ וּבֵין בָּרֶד

    . .

    Therefore the well was called the Well of the Living One who Sees; behold, it is between Rekem (Kadesh) and Bered.

  15. Bereshit 16:15

    וַתֵּלֶד הָגָר לְאַבְרָם בֵּן וַיִּקְרָא אַבְרָם שֶׁם-בְּנוֹ אֲשֶׁר-יָלְדָה הָגָר יִשְׁמָעֵאל

    And Hagar bore to Abram a son; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar had borne him, Ishmael.

  16. Bereshit 16:16

    וְאַבְרָם בֶּן-שְׁמֹנִים שָׁנָה וְשֵׁשׁ שָׁנִים בְּלֶדֶת-הָגָר אֶת-יִשְׁמָעֵאל לְאַבְרָם

    And Abram was a son of eighty-six years when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
