- Shemot 2:1
וַיֵּלֶךְ אִישׁ מִבֵּית לֵוִי וַיִּקַּח אֶת-בַּת-לֵוִי
.
Then a man of the family of Levi went, and married the daughter of Levi.
- Shemot 2:2
וַתַּהַר הָאִשָּׁה וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן וַתֵּרֶא אֹתוֹ כִּי-טוֹב הוּא וַתִּצְפְּנֵהוּ שְׁלֹשָׁה יְרָחִים
. .
And the woman conceived, and bore a son; and when she saw that he was fair, she hid him for three months.

וְלֹא-יָכְלָה עוֹד הַצְּפִינוֹ וַתִּקַּח-לוֹ תֵּבַת גֹּמֶא וַתַּחְמְרָה בַחֵמָר וּבַזָּפֶת וַתָּשֶׂם בָּהּ אֶת-הַיֶּלֶד וַתָּשֶׂם בַּסּוּף עַל-שְׂפַת הַיְאֹר

And she could no longer hide him; so she took for him an ark of papyrus, and sealed it with bitumen and pitch; and she set the babe inside it, and set it in the reed-thicket upon the bank of the Nile.

וַתֵּתַצַּב אֲחֹתוֹ מֵרָחֹק לְדֵעָה מַה-יֵּעָשֶׂה לוֹ

And his sister stood at a distance, to see what would be done with him.

וַתֵּרֶד בַּת-פַּרְעֹה לִרְחֹץ עַל-הַיְאֹר וְנַעֲרֹתֶיהָ הֹלְכֹת עַל-יַד הַיְאֹר וַתֵּרֶא אֶת-הַתֵּבָה בְּתוֹךְ הַסּוּף וַתִּשְׁלַח אֶת-אֲמָתָהּ וַתִּקָּחֶהָ
. . .
And Pharaoh's daughter came down to bathe in the Nile; and her maids walked along its bank. She saw the ark in the midst of the reed-thicket, and she stretched out her hand and took it.

וַתִּפְתַּח וַתִּרְאֵהוּ אֶת-הַיֶּלֶד וְהִנֵּה-נַעַר בֹּכֶה וַתַּחְמֹל עָלָיו--וַתֹּאמֶר מִיַּלְדֵי הָעִבְרִים זֶה
. . . .
And she opened it and saw him — behold, a babe was crying; and she had compassion on him, and said: 'This is one of the children of the Hebrews.'

וַתֹּאמֶר אֲחֹתוֹ אֶל-בַּת-פַּרְעֹה הַאֵלֵךְ וְקָרָאתִי לָךְ אִשָּׁה מֵינֶקֶת מִן הָעִבְרִיֹּת וְתֵינִק לָךְ אֶת-הַיָּלֶד

She said to her: 'Shall I go and call for you a nursing woman from the Hebrews, that she may nurse him for you?'
- Shemot 2:8
וַתֹּאמֶר-לָהּ בַּת-פַּרְעֹה לֵכִי וַתֵּלֶךְ הָעַלְמָה וַתִּקְרָא אֶת-אֵם הַיָּלֶד

Pharaoh's daughter said to her: 'Go.' And the maiden went, and called the mother of the babe.

וַתֹּאמֶר לָהּ בַּת-פַּרְעֹה הֵילִיכִי אֶת-הַיֶּלֶד הַזֶּה וְהֵינִקִהוּ לִי וַאֲנִי אֶתֵּן אֶת-שְׂכָרֵךְ וַתִּקַּח הָאִשָּׁה הַיֶּלֶד וַתְּנִיקֵהוּ
. . . .
And Pharaoh's daughter said to her: 'Here, take this babe — nurse him for me, and I will give you your wage.' And the woman took the babe, and nursed him.

וַיִּגְדַּל הַיֶּלֶד וַתְּבִאֵהוּ לְבַת-פַּרְעֹה וַיְהִי-לָהּ לְבֵן וַתִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ מֹשֶׁה וַתֹּאמֶר כִּי מִן-הַמַּיִם מְשִׁיתִהוּ
. . . . .
And when the babe grew, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter; and he became to her like a son. And she named him Moses, saying: 'For I drew him out from the water.'

וַיְהִי בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם וַיִּגְדַּל מֹשֶׁה וַיֵּצֵא אֶל-אֶחָיו וַיַּרְא בְּסִבְלֹתָם וַיַּרְא אִישׁ מִצְרִי מַכֶּה אִישׁ-עִבְרִי מֵאֶחָיו
. . .
And it was in those days that Moses grew up, and he went out to his brothers, and he looked upon their burdens. And behold, an Egyptian man was striking a Hebrew man, one of his brothers.

וַיִּפֶן כֹּה וָכֹה וַיַּרְא כִּי אֵין אִישׁ וַיַּךְ אֶת-הַמִּצְרִי וַיִּטְמְנֵהוּ בַּחוֹל

And he turned right and left, and saw that there was no one [about]; and he struck the Egyptian, and he died; and he buried him in the sand.

וַיֵּצֵא בַּיּוֹם הַשֵּׁנִי וְהִנֵּה שְׁנֵי-אֲנָשִׁים עִבְרִים נִצִּים וַיֹּאמֶר לָרָשָׁע לָמָּה תַכֶּה רֵעֶךָ
. . .
And he went out on the second day; and behold, two Hebrew men were quarreling. And he said to the unjust one of them: 'Why do you strike your companion?'

וַיֹּאמֶר מִי שָׂמְךָ לְאִישׁ שַׂר וְשֹׁפֵט עָלֵינוּ--הַלְהָרְגֵנִי אַתָּה אֹמֵר כַּאֲשֶׁר הָרַגְתָּ אֶת-הַמִּצְרִי וַיִּירָא מֹשֶׁה וַיֹּאמַר אָכֵן נוֹדַע הַדָּבָר
. . . . .
And he said: 'Who set you a chief and a judge over us? Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?' And Moses was alarmed, and said: 'Indeed, the matter has become known.'

וַיִּשְׁמַע פַּרְעֹה אֶת-הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה וַיְבַקֵּשׁ לַהֲרֹג אֶת-מֹשֶׁה וַיִּבְרַח מֹשֶׁה מִפְּנֵי פַרְעֹה וַיֵּשֶׁב בְּאֶרֶץ-מִדְיָן וַיֵּשֶׁב עַל-הַבְּאֵר

And when Pharaoh heard of this matter, he sought to kill Moses. And Moses fled from before him, and came to the land of Midian, and sat by the well.

וּלְכֹהֵן מִדְיָן שֶׁבַע בָּנוֹת וַתָּבֹאנָה וַתִּדְלֶנָה וַתְּמַלֶּאנָה אֶת-הָרְהָטִים לְהַשְׁקוֹת צֹאן אֲבִיהֶן

And the imām of Midian had seven daughters; and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.

וַיָּבֹאוּ הָרֹעִים וַיְגָרְשׁוּם וַיָּקָם מֹשֶׁה וַיּוֹשִׁעָן וַיַּשְׁקְ אֶת-צֹאנָם

And the shepherds came and drove them away; and Moses arose and aided them, and watered their flock.

וַתָּבֹאנָה אֶל-רְעוּאֵל אֲבִיהֶן וַיֹּאמֶר מַדּוּעַ מִהַרְתֶּן בֹּא הַיּוֹם

And when they came to Reuel their father, he said: 'What is your concern that you have hurried to come today?'

וַתֹּאמַרְןָ--אִישׁ מִצְרִי הִצִּילָנוּ מִיַּד הָרֹעִים וְגַם-דָּלֹה דָלָה לָנוּ וַיַּשְׁקְ אֶת-הַצֹּאן

And they said to him: 'An Egyptian man rescued us from the hand of the shepherds; and he also drew water for us, and watered the flock.'

וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל-בְּנֹתָיו וְאַיּוֹ לָמָּה זֶּה עֲזַבְתֶּן אֶת-הָאִישׁ קִרְאֶן לוֹ וְיֹאכַל לָחֶם

He said to his daughters: 'And where is he? Why have you left the man? Call him, that he may eat a meal.'
- Shemot 2:21
וַיּוֹאֶל מֹשֶׁה לָשֶׁבֶת אֶת-הָאִישׁ וַיִּתֵּן אֶת-צִפֹּרָה בִתּוֹ לְמֹשֶׁה

And Moses consented to dwell with the man; and he gave him Zipporah his daughter [in marriage].

וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן וַיִּקְרָא אֶת-שְׁמוֹ גֵּרְשֹׁם כִּי אָמַר--גֵּר הָיִיתִי בְּאֶרֶץ נָכְרִיָּה

And she bore a son; and he named him Gershom — for he said: 'I became a stranger in a strange land.'

וַיְהִי בַיָּמִים הָרַבִּים הָהֵם וַיָּמָת מֶלֶךְ מִצְרַיִם וַיֵּאָנְחוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל מִן-הָעֲבֹדָה וַיִּזְעָקוּ וַתַּעַל שַׁוְעָתָם אֶל-הָאֱלֹהִים מִן-הָעֲבֹדָה

And it was also in those long days that the king of Egypt died; and the sons of Israel groaned because of their hard service, and they cried out; and their plea ascended to God from the [hard] service.

וַיִּשְׁמַע אֱלֹהִים אֶת-נַאֲקָתָם וַיִּזְכֹּר אֱלֹהִים אֶת-בְּרִיתוֹ אֶת-אַבְרָהָם אֶת-יִצְחָק וְאֶת-יַעֲקֹב

And God heard their groaning, and remembered His covenant, which was with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

וַיַּרְא אֱלֹהִים אֶת-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיֵּדַע אֱלֹהִים
And God beheld them, and had mercy on them.
