- Bereshit 47:1
. . . . .
And Joseph entered to Pharaoh, and told him, and said: 'My father and my brothers, and their sheep and their cattle and all that they have, have come from the land of Canaan; and behold, they are in the land of al-Sadir (Goshen).'
- Bereshit 47:2
.
And he took five men of his brothers, and presented them before Pharaoh.
- Bereshit 47:3
. . . .
And Pharaoh said to his brothers: 'What is your occupation?' They said to him: 'Your servants are shepherds of sheep — we and our fathers.'
- Bereshit 47:4
. . . .
Then they said: 'We have come to sojourn in your land — for there is no pasture for the sheep of your servants, because the famine is severe in the land of Canaan; let your servants dwell in the land of al-Sadir.'
- Bereshit 47:5
And Pharaoh said to Joseph: 'Your father and your brothers have come to you.
- Bereshit 47:6
. . . . . .
Behold, the land of Egypt is before you; settle them in its best part; let them dwell in the land of al-Sadir. And if you know that there are men of valor among them, set them as chiefs of stewards over my cattle.'
- Bereshit 47:7
. .
And Joseph brought Jacob his father in, and set him before Pharaoh; and he greeted him.
- Bereshit 47:8
.
Pharaoh said to him: 'How many are the years of your life?'
- Bereshit 47:9
. . . . .
Jacob said to him: 'The years of my lifetime are a hundred and thirty years; few and evil have they been, and have not reached the years of the lifetime of my fathers in the days of their sojourning.'
- Bereshit 47:10
.
Then Jacob blessed him; and he went out from before him.
- Bereshit 47:11
. . .
And Joseph settled his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt — in its best part — that is the land of Ein Shams (Rameses) — as Pharaoh had commanded.
- Bereshit 47:12
. .
And Joseph supplied his father and his brothers, and the rest of his father's household, with food — by the measure of their little ones.
- Bereshit 47:13
. . .
And there was no food in all the land — for the famine was very severe; and the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished from the famine.
- Bereshit 47:14
. . .
And Joseph gathered all the money found in the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan, in exchange for the grain they bought; and he brought it into Pharaoh's treasury.
- Bereshit 47:15
. . .
And when the money was used up from the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph, saying: 'Give us food — that we may not die before you; for the money is used up.'
- Bereshit 47:16
. .
Joseph said to them: 'Bring your livestock; I shall give you grain for them, since the money is used up.'
- Bereshit 47:17
. . . .
And they brought their livestock; and he gave them food for the horses, and for the flocks of sheep, and for the cattle, and for the donkeys; and he supplied them with food for all their livestock that year.
- Bereshit 47:18
. . . . . .
And when that year was used up, they came to him in the second year, and said: 'We shall not hide from my lord that the money is used up, and the livestock and the beasts are with my lord; nothing remains before me except our bodies and our fields.
- Bereshit 47:19
. . . . .
Why should we die in your presence — we and our fields? Buy us and our fields for food; and we shall be servants, and our fields shall be Pharaoh's property. And give us seed, that we may live and not die, and the land may not be desolate.'
- Bereshit 47:20
. . .
And Joseph bought all the fields of the Egyptians for Pharaoh — for they sold them, each man his property, because the famine was severe upon them; and the lands became Pharaoh's.
- Bereshit 47:21
.
And he removed the people from their towns, from one end of Egypt's border to the other.
- Bereshit 47:22
. . .
Only the fields of their priests he did not buy — for the provision was theirs from Pharaoh; and they would eat their provision which he gave them; therefore they did not need to sell their fields.
- Bereshit 47:23
. . .
Then Joseph said to the people: 'Behold, I have bought you and your fields for Pharaoh; here is seed for you to sow in the land.
- Bereshit 47:24
. . .
And when the produce comes in, you shall give the fifth to Pharaoh; and the four parts shall be yours — for seed of the fields, and for food, and for those in your households, and for your little ones.'
- Bereshit 47:25
. .
They said: 'You have kept us alive; we have found favor with my lord, and we shall be servants of Pharaoh.'
- Bereshit 47:26
. . . .
And Joseph made it a statute to this day over the land of Egypt: that they should give the fifth to Pharaoh — except for the fields of the priests alone; those were theirs alone, and did not become Pharaoh's.
- Bereshit 47:27

. . .
And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years; and the whole of his lifetime came to a hundred and forty-seven years.
- Bereshit 47:29
. . .
And when the time of Israel's death drew near, he called his son Joseph, and said to him: 'If I have found favor with you, place your hand under my covenant; and do me a kindness and a favor — that you shall not bury me in Egypt.
- Bereshit 47:30
. . . .
Rather — when I come to my fathers, carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burial-place.' He said: 'I shall do as you have said.'
- Bereshit 47:31
. .
He said: 'Swear to me.' And he swore to him. And Israel bowed down upon the head of the bed in thanks.
