- Shemot 9:1
. . .
Then God said to Moses: 'Go in to Pharaoh, and say to him: Thus says God, the God of the Hebrews — release my people that they may serve me.
- Shemot 9:2
.
For if you refuse to release them, and you persist in holding them,
- Shemot 9:3
. . .
then a plague of God shall come upon your livestock which are in the open country — upon the horses and the donkeys and the camels, and the cattle and the flock — a very great pestilence.
- Shemot 9:4
. . . .
And God shall distinguish between the livestock of the sons of Israel and the livestock of the Egyptians, and not a single thing of all that belongs to the sons of Israel shall die.'
- Shemot 9:5
. .
And God appointed a time, saying: 'Tomorrow God shall do this thing in the land.'
- Shemot 9:6
. .
And God did this thing on the morrow; and all the livestock of the Egyptians died, and of the livestock of the sons of Israel not one died.
- Shemot 9:7
. . . .
And Pharaoh sent and looked — and behold, not one of the livestock of the sons of Israel had died. And his heart was hardened, and he did not release the people.
- Shemot 9:8
. . . .
And God said to Moses and Aaron: 'Take for yourselves your double-handful of soot from the furnace, and Moses shall scatter it into the air in the presence of Pharaoh;
- Shemot 9:9
. . . .
and it shall become dust over all the land of Egypt, and it shall be upon the people and upon the beasts — a boil breaking out in blisters — over all the land of Egypt.'
- Shemot 9:10
. . . .
So they took from the soot of the furnace, and stood before Pharaoh; and Moses scattered it into the air, and there came boils breaking out in blisters, growing upon the people and upon the beasts.
- Shemot 9:11
. .
And the learned men were unable to stand before Moses on account of the boil, for it was upon them and upon the rest of the Egyptians.
- Shemot 9:12
. .
And God hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he did not accept from them — as God had said to Moses.
- Shemot 9:13
. . . . .
And God said to Moses: 'Rise early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh, and say to him: Thus says God, the God of the Hebrews — release my people that they may serve me.
- Shemot 9:14
. . . .
For in this instance I am sending many of my plagues into your heart, and against your officers and your people — so that you may know that there is none like me in all the world.
- Shemot 9:15
. .
For now, had I unleashed my plagues, I would have struck you and your people with pestilence, and you would have been obliterated from the land.
- Shemot 9:16
. .
But it is for this very reason that I have kept you alive — to show you my power, and so that my name may be told throughout all the world.
- Shemot 9:17
.
Yet you are still bent upon my people, so as not to release them.
- Shemot 9:18
. . .
Behold, I am about to rain down at about this same time tomorrow a very great hail, the like of which has not been in Egypt from the day it was founded until now.
- Shemot 9:19
. . .
So send now — secure your livestock and all that you have in the open country; for any person or beast found in the open country that does not take shelter in the dwellings — the hail shall fall upon them and they shall die.'
- Shemot 9:20
. .
Whoever among Pharaoh's officers feared the word of God drove his servants and his livestock into the houses.
- Shemot 9:21
.
And whoever did not turn his heart to the word of God left his servants and his livestock in the open country.
- Shemot 9:22
. . . .
And God said to Moses: 'Stretch out your hand toward the sky, that there be hail over all the land of Egypt — upon the people and upon the beasts, and upon all the grass of the open country in the land of Egypt.'
- Shemot 9:23
. . .
And Moses stretched out his staff toward the sky; and God proclaimed thunderclaps and hail, and fire moved along the earth; and God rained down hail upon the land of Egypt.
- Shemot 9:24
. . . .
And there was hail, with fire blazing in its midst — very great, the like of which had not been in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.
- Shemot 9:25
. . . .
And the hail struck throughout all the land of Egypt everything that was in the open country, from person to beast; and the hail struck all the grass thereof, and shattered all the trees thereof.
- Shemot 9:26
. .
Except in the land of Goshen, where the sons of Israel were — there was no hail.
- Shemot 9:27
. . . .
And Pharaoh sent and called for Moses and Aaron, and said to them: 'I have sinned this time — God is the just one, and I and my people are the wrongdoers.
- Shemot 9:28
. . .
Intercede with God; for it is enough that there have been thunderclaps of God and hail upon us — and I shall release you, and you need not remain any longer.'
- Shemot 9:29
. . . . . .
Then Moses said: 'When I go out from the town, I shall spread out my hands to God, and the thunderclaps shall cease, and the hail shall be no more — so that you may know that the earth belongs to God.
- Shemot 9:30
. .
But as for you and your officers, I know that you have yet to fear the presence of God.'
- Shemot 9:31
. .
Now the flax and the barley had been ruined, for the barley was already in ear and the flax was in bud.
- Shemot 9:32
.
But the wheat and the spelt were not ruined, for they are late-growing.
- Shemot 9:33
. . .
And when Moses went out from Pharaoh and from his town, he spread out his hands to God; and the thunderclaps and the hail ceased, and no rain poured down upon the earth.
- Shemot 9:34
. . .
And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunderclaps had ceased, he went back to sinning — and he and his officers hardened their hearts.
- Shemot 9:35
.
And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not release them — as God had said to Moses.
